Harmon Kardon PM 665

This is a Top of Line dual power supply Harmon Kardon integrated amplifier circa 1986.

Harmon Kardon (HK) really do have their own sound and it is quite distinctive so I decided to give this amp a run for a few days before I wrote anything about it.

So what did I hear?

Bass;
warm and rich, tight and controlled. Bass that is FULL! Well that is what I expect from a 70s HK and the PM 665 delivers on all counts in the lower register.

Mid range
is superb with great vocal definition. The sound stage is wide and the sweet spot seemed to be everywhere. It does not seem to matter where you sit with the 665, its all good.

Highs
;
they are there but perhaps a little restrained for my liking. This may be a speaker match issue as the overall sound of the HK 665 is so good I suspect a judicious choice of speakers will make quite a big difference.

This is a very impressive amplifier with a sound quality not readily found in an 80s amp. If I have one reservation about this amp its that it did not seem to have the full presence of atmospheric sound that I have come to enjoy from most of the 70s Hi Fi amps I have had the pleasure of listening too. I found myself wishing the sound was a little looser, if that makes any sense. Strangely, when running the stereo VCR through this beast the sound is fantastic across the board. I will be doing more listening testing this week.

Overall this is one impressive piece of equipment with power to burn and if you love your bass then this could well be your soul mate!
