Marantz 3300 Preamp
I have set this Preamp up running through
the power output of a Sansui 555a and it is sounding very good
indeed. Or they are sounding very good indeed. At the time of
writing that is just four hours of listening. I will be trying
some comparisons between the 555a as an integrated and just the
power output stage with the 3300. We also have an Inkel dual
power supply power amp that I have not listed yet & this
should be a good opportunity for giving it a listen too. A full
review will follow.
Apparently this unit had a USD list price of $450.00 in 1975, the third year it was in production. A quick trip to the inflation calculator gives a conversion to $1 708 USD or $2028 Australian (at time of writing).
While looking at these conversions which I
don't feel truly reflects the value of this unit in today's money
I though I would look at car prices as a comparison. I came
up with this1974 US Buick Station Wagon $4 371. A 2007 Buick
Wagon is around $30 000 USD.
Divide a Buick station wagon circa 1974 by
a Marantz Preamp circa 1975, it goes about 9 times, divided the
2007 Buick by 9 and you get $3 333.00 USD. I will let those who
are interested enough do the conversion to Australian dollars
themselves. That looks more like what a Preamp should cost and
is strangely in-line with the starting prices for some of the
better known new Preamps today! Of course with the 3300 you still
get tone controls which modern manufactures of high end gear
seem to believe is now surplus to requirement. Enough of my back-of-the-envelope
economics, on with the specs.
