Vintage Sansui AU-555 Integrated Amp 1972.
The best looking amp & the AU series that started it all.
Please note!
for expedience I have shot my
own 555. The sale item has corrosion on the top of the case but
is otherwise in similar good condition.
Description
Vintage Sansui AU-555 Black face Integrated Amp circa 1972. The
first AU series set the standard for Hi Fidelity integrated
amplifiers and they are still brilliant today. Very good working
order. Including power light. Made in Japan 240v.
Knobs
Speakers A, B, A+B, Separate Treble & Bass for left & right
channels, Volume, Balance & input select.
Switches
High & Low filter (early Dolby), Audio muting (effectively
doubles the sensitivity of the volume), Loudness, Stereo/Mono,
Tape source (input) & speaker loading, low high (on rear).
Size
Hight 120mm Width 380mm Depth 295mm. Weight TBA, not light.
Inputs
Tape Head (obsolete), Phono 1 & 2, Aux 1(mic) & 2. Tape
(on switch). Aux 1 & 2 can be used for CD, DVD, Tuner, VCR
etc. Tape Head is nearly useless as there are no resistors between
the input & pre-amp stage. This situation can be easily modified
by the fitting of an appropriate resistor by your local hi fi
technician if you need an extra input!
Pre-Amp, inputs and power supply are all shielded.
Performance
This is the amp that really made me notice the difference in
quality between amps & this amps quality exceptional. The
AU series amps, 222, 555, 777, 999 were designed to maintain
the sound qualities of Sansui's successful valve amplifier.
The 555 is quite a powerful amp with incredible instrument
clarity and depth. The instruments sound real. Bass is rich & full,
highs soar. I have a test now for deciding if an amp plays
all the music. I put on a live album of Astor Piazzolla live
in Rome. If I don't here the atmosphere of the venue & the
music I know I am getting short changed. With this amp it's
all there, not just the notes.
