Teac As-100 Integrated Amplifier Circa 1973

Sold

Bob has turned up the Specifications for this unit & the general brochure from the year. I am pleased to see my estimate of the power output was right on the money.

Specification, Power amp stage.
Rated Power 40w/40w THD 0.2% 8 ohms load
Harmonic Distortion, below 0.2% rated power
IM Distortion, below 0.2% rated power
Power bandwidth, 10-40,000Hz, -3db
Frequency Response 5-200,000Hz, +0, -2db
Residual system noise, below 0.3mV.

Interestingly there was only one Amplifier, Tuner, Receiver, released by Teac in this series. The brochure reads; "Direct coupled differential amplifiers provide flat frequency response beyond the range of audibility, extremely low harmonic distortion and a very high S/N ratio produce unparalleled sound quality.
...NPN-PNP-NPN 3 stage direct coupled phono amplifier."

Performance
I tested this amp listening to Cassandra Wilson ‘glamoured’ and Diana Krall ‘Live in Paris ’. Diana Krall Live is a favorite test Cd as the live vocals are extremely demanding with the sharp and sudden attacks that come from performing live at the piano. These sudden vocal attacks highlight the ability of the amp to respond to sudden dynamic change without becoming harsh. The Teac responded well to this test though not flawlessly, sadly very few amps come through this test unscathed. Overall however the sound is rich and highly musical with beautiful detail.

This amp has a very clear well blended sound with a rich tight bass, crisp well defined highs and an excellently positioned mid rang that optimises vocals without pushing them too far forward in the stereo sound stage.

If you are wondering what all the fuss over vintage audio is all about this amp is a superb choice that will pleasantly surprise and excite you.

There is an amazing amount of power for the rated power consumption, easily equivalent to the output one would expect from Yamaha’s rated at 300+ watts power consumption. This in my mind easily represents the equivalent of 30~40 watts per Channel power output.

Inputs/Controls
Phono 1 & 2, Aux 1 & 2, Tuner, Tape. Mode, Stereo, Mono, Reverse, Left, Right. Bass & Treble, split frequency +- on two knobs each! High & Low Filters, Loudness. Speakers A & B. Balance rear mounted on the volume control. Pre in/out with united or separate switch on rear. All in all everything you would expect to find on a top of line amplifier.

9.8Kg, 410w 310d 140h.

Condition
Some surface corrosion on the top of the case and a few scratches on the top and side. One knob is NOT original; the profile is a very good match but has a white centre disk instead of a silver one. We will be looking out for a solution to this minor problem.

This is a great amp with a rugged commercial design.
The AS-100 is from that period in time where compromise in audio was not an option.
